Many travelers completely write-off visiting New York City during the winter months because it's cold. In my opinion, that's the only real downside. Have you ever heard the saying, "There is no bad weather, only bad clothes"? I love this: because truly, if you dress appropriately you will be just fine!
What this practically means is investing in some thermal base layers like these, a great winter coat like this, and some warm, waterproof boots like these. Throw on a hat, gloves, a scarf, and you're off on your epic NYC winter adventure! The below photo was taken in January. Cold for sure, but look at that sunshine! We walked many miles on this particular day.
I spend time in NYC every winter (January-March) because of the many advantages. First of all, prices are rock bottom. Flights are cheap, hotels are deeply discounted and show tickets are the lowest you'll find them. Second, availability is awesome. I'm sure you've heard (or experienced) the frustration of trying to get reservations at certain restaurants. You will encounter much less of this during the winter months! It's your best chance to score a reservation at Gramercy Tavern, 4 Charles, Via Carota, and the like. I have to tell you though, places like Polo Bar and Le Cafe at Louis Vuitton hold back most of their reservations for the rich and famous so unless are, good luck with those! Lastly, it is QUIET. Instead of sharing the sidewalk with hundreds of people in Midtown, you're sharing them with dozens. In the neighborhoods (Chelsea, Greenwich, West Village, East Village, etc.) you're walking the streets with locals, and their kids and dogs! It probably goes without saying, but lines at attractions like the Empire State Building move much faster. There is no need to upgrade to the Express Pass (another savings!).
Because tourism numbers drop off so drastically during the winter months, NYC Tourism teams up with restaurants, hotels, and Broadway to offer some great deals. I take advantage of Broadway Week or Off-Broadway week every year. You simply can't do better than 2 for 1 show tickets! Here is a list of dates and links to take a look at the deals:
One final note: there is no cheaper time to stay at a Sonder in NYC, than during the winter. Their rates are not only the lowest they will be all year, but you can add my discount code for an additional 10% off. My favorite properties are Sonder Flatiron, Sonder Chambers and The William. But they're all good! My discount code for Sonder is BEYONDSQ10 and works at any of their 12 NYC locations.
